The Benefits of Using a Safety Mat in a Facility Entryway

You know what everyone says about first impressions, and perhaps without even realizing it, your facility’s entrance mats go a long way towards how both employees and visitors judge your entire operation. An attractive and safe space for people to start their visit can make a continuing good impression and enhance facility safety at the same time. It’s a vast improvement over a wet, dirty, and hazardous concrete floor.

Since obviously everyone has to come in and out of an entryway, it’s by necessity going to be a high traffic area. A good program of safety mats, such as those available from Watco, can take up dirt, grime, and sludge that otherwise would be tracked throughout the building and possibly spread a fall hazard far beyond the vestibule.

The problem may be more serious than you think: the National Safety Council reported nearly 40,000 slip, trip and fall fatalities in 2019, second only to motor vehicle fatalities as a cause of accidental death. By investing in an entrance matting program for your facility you’ll significantly reduce the risk of these tragic accidents.

In Winter or Spring, You Won't Fall

While in many climates, the snow, ice and slush will be tracked in during the winter months, remember that spring showers and summer rains can muddy up as well, and autumn leaves can cling to shoes and boots.

A fringe benefit might be peace and quiet. It’s a lot less noisy to have people walk on the “walkoff mat” rather than clip clopping on the concrete. If you have a busy office or restaurant, it will allow customers to have their meals, and employees to continue their jobs, with less disturbance. In a restaurant, for example, it will allow the staff to stand on a surface that’s less fatiguing than a concrete or tile floor. Plus, if someone drops a cocktail glass or other delicate object, there’s a lot less chance of it breaking.

This includes breaking bones; having the safety mat in place reduces the fall hazard, which reduces the potential for injury as well as liability lawsuits if indeed someone does fall.
